Garden of Sensory Delights (2023)
‘Pairi-daēza’ means ‘walled garden’ in Persian, and is the origin of the English for ‘paradise’. It’s also related to ‘parigauda’, meaning a screen, which is the root of the Hebrew ‘pargod’ - a key concept in Jewish mysticism that describes our veiled relationship to immanence.
This audiovisual project tells a mystical story inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s uncanny Garden of Earthly Delights. The aim was to create a immerse the audience in the middle of the garden and the unfolding Eden inspired narrative.
This project was a collaboration with visual designer Alexander Topaz. I designed the sound for an ambisonic performance at the IRCAM Forum 2023 in Paris and IKLECTIK ArtLab London. This version was recorded for playback in stereo speakers or headphones.
Shema(manism): what lurks in culture’s shadow? (2022)
Shema Yisrael ('Hear, O Israel!') is the most important prayer in the Jewish tradition. Like an amulet, it’s attached inside mezuzot boxes to the gates of homes and doorposts of its rooms. When praying, it’s bound like a totem to the forehead in tefillin boxes attached to leather straps that wrap god’s name around the arm. Across the centuries, the Shema has been recited to seek safe passage, including at death.
This audiovisual project explored the Shema's shamanic roots hiding in the tradition's shadow.
